ASSIGNMENT TWO:
The second book assignment is Mother Bruce by Ryan T. Higgins. Be sure to test when you're done reading/listening (link below). I always have them read a book three times before testing! I want to focus on the vocabulary that the author uses in this book, so grab a couple pieces of paper, scissors, and something to write with! Divide one piece of paper into three columns labeled one syllable, two syllables, and three syllables. Use the other paper to cut out word cards (at least nine, but you can cut more for an extension activity!) These do not have to be fancy and colorful, but they certainly can be if you want them to be! Have your student write the following words from the story on the word cards and separate them into their appropriate columns: unwelcome, scooped, pesky, mistaken, gosling, support, stomped, migration, and stern. While they're sorting, discuss the meanings of the words and use them in sentences. You can even write the sentences on the back of the word cards! *Extension activity: Challenge your kids to find extra words from the story to add to each column. **To integrate art & writing, you can have students write about and draw a picture of what they would do with the goslings if they were victims of mistaken identity and had to be a parent to them! When you're done, you can snap a picture and post it to the "Look What We Did" post if you'd like! I can't wait to see your work on display!
