Check out this fun activity! Thank you Mrs. Tara Wiles for supplying the videos (click on the buttons below) and the picture.
Grab a few cups, some white flowers, a little water, and some food coloring. Place a small amount of water in each cup. Drop several drops of the desired color food coloring in each cup. Trim the stems of the flowers so that they sit in the colored water. Leave for several days and watch your flowers change colors. Daisies pictured below. It works really well with carnations. If you try this at home, snap a picture and email it to me at [email protected].

ASSIGNMENT EIGHT
The next book assignment is Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late by Mo Willems. Be sure to test when you're done reading/listening (link below). I always have them read a book three times before testing! I want to focus on opinions and reasons. Grab a piece of paper and fold it hamburger. Then fold it again the same way. Unfold it and you should have 4 long skinny sections. Trace the folds (picture below). In the top box, write the word “opinion.” In the other three boxes write the word “reason.” Let’s persuade the pigeon to go to bed. In the top box, write your opinion of why the pigeon needs to go to bed. In the rest of the boxes, write the reasons that support your answer. *Extension activity-Use the graphic organizer you just made to write a letter to the pigeon to persuade him to go to bed. **To integrate art check out the video below by author and illustrator Mo Willems. Learn about Mo and his process. You may skip along to the 16 minute mark to follow along on a blank piece of paper to draw your own pigeon. The next book assignment is Me and My Cat by Satoshi Kitamura. Be sure to test when you're done reading/listening (link below). I always have them read a book three times before testing! I want to focus on critical thinking. Ask your kiddo, ”Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be an animal?“ After reading Me and My Cat, you’ll need paper and something to write with. Fold your paper into 4 sections (hotdog and hamburger) then unfold it. Draw an oval in the middle where the 2 lines meet. There’s a picture below! At the top of each square write one of the following: -What and how does it eat? -What is it’s habitat (or where does it live)? -What’s one thing it does? -What does it look like or sound like? Have your kiddo write their favorite animal in the oval. In each square below the questions, your kiddo will write a complete sentence to answer the question. *Extension activity-Use the graphic organizer you just made to write a story. It can start with “If I were to swap places with a _________ (full in animal) I would...” Use the sentences written in the squares to develop the story. Challenge your student to add details and use describing words. **To integrate art. Have kiddos illustrate the animal they swapped places with. Reynolds. Be sure to test when you're done reading/listening (link below). I always have them read a book three times before testing!
This story is filled with adjectives! I want you to pick 5 adjectives from the book to write a sentence with and illustrate your sentences. Grab a piece of paper and something to write with! This is an easy assignment because it's FRIDAY (YAY!!) There's also a cool experiment for you to do. Don't worry if you don't have what you need - I'm posting pictures below for you to see how it works. You can always do it later! The adjective "colorful" is used to describe the type of dreamer the character can be, so let's get colorful! Materials needed: A white or very lightly colored plate, a bag of Skittles, and a cup of warm water. Line Skittles up around the lip of the plate, making a circle. Put the Skittles close together. Pour warm water into the middle, just enough to reach the Skittles but not so much that they try to float around. Watch how the colors react to the warm water! When you're done, you can snap a picture and email it to me at [email protected]! to me The fifth book assignment is The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors by Drew Daywalt. Be sure to test when you're done reading/listening (link below). I always have them read a book three times before testing! In this story, the main characters are the most powerful in their normal environments, so they go out in search of a "worthy foe" who can defeat them. Grab a few pieces of paper, scissors, and something to write with! See the pictures to show how to make a graphic cycle on the first paper. Once you've plugged the objects into the cycle, write a sentence to explain each part of the cycle. These do not have to be fancy and colorful, but they certainly can be if you want them to be! *Math Extension activity: On the second paper, draw a graph with rock, paper, and scissors at the bottom (see example below). Grab a friend or family member and start playing Rock, Paper, Scissors. After each game, graph which object won. You'll need 20-30 small squares to graph, so go ahead and cut those out before you get started! Compare the numbers at the end. Which object won the most games? Which object won the fewest? What's the difference in the two? Write a number sentence! The fourth book assignment is Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Pena. Be sure to test when you're done reading/listening (link below). I always have them read a book three times before testing! In this story, CJ learns to find beauty in the unexpected. Grab a couple pieces of paper, crayons or markers, and something to write with! See the pictures to show how to make the graphic organizer for this activity. On the first paper, draw 3 beautiful things that CJ got to see that didn't cost any money. My example is the rainbow he saw when he and Nana made it to their stop on Market Street. At the bottom, write about two acts of kindness that Nana and CJ performed on their bus ride to Market Street. These do not have to be fancy and colorful, but they certainly can be if you want them to be! *Extension activity: Challenge your kids to come up with different random acts of kindness that he/she can perform while quarantined. It can be as simple as writing a letter to a family member, drawing a picture for a neighbor to leave on their door, or baking cookies for someone special. When you're done, you can snap a picture and post it to the "Look What We Did" post if you'd like! I can't wait to see your work on display! The next book assignment is A Perfectly Messed-Up Story by Patrick McDonnell. Be sure to test when you're done reading/listening (link below). I always have them read a book three times before testing! After listening to/reading the story, discuss how Louie's story is similar to our lives right now. How are you making the best of a messed-up situation? Get a piece of paper and fold into six boxes. Number the boxes and write the things that messed up Louie's story in sequential order. You can draw a picture to go with it! *Extension activity: Write a sentence or two to explain how Louie's attitude/mindset changed at the end of the story. **To integrate art, draw a scribble on a piece of paper and have your child use that scribble to make a work of art! Show them how you can make the best out of something that seems to be messed-up. Then, revisit the discussion question at the beginning of this post: How else can you make the best of this messed-up situation we are in with school? What more can you do? Talk it out! When you're done, you can snap a picture of your completed activities and post them to the "Look What We Did" post if you'd like! I can't wait to see your work on display! The second book assignment is Mother Bruce by Ryan T. Higgins. Be sure to test when you're done reading/listening (link below). I always have them read a book three times before testing! I want to focus on the vocabulary that the author uses in this book, so grab a couple pieces of paper, scissors, and something to write with! Divide one piece of paper into three columns labeled one syllable, two syllables, and three syllables. Use the other paper to cut out word cards (at least nine, but you can cut more for an extension activity!) These do not have to be fancy and colorful, but they certainly can be if you want them to be! Have your student write the following words from the story on the word cards and separate them into their appropriate columns: unwelcome, scooped, pesky, mistaken, gosling, support, stomped, migration, and stern. While they're sorting, discuss the meanings of the words and use them in sentences. You can even write the sentences on the back of the word cards! *Extension activity: Challenge your kids to find extra words from the story to add to each column. **To integrate art & writing, you can have students write about and draw a picture of what they would do with the goslings if they were victims of mistaken identity and had to be a parent to them! When you're done, you can snap a picture and post it to the "Look What We Did" post if you'd like! I can't wait to see your work on display! I always have them read a book three times before testing! I want to focus on the elements in this story, so grab a piece of paper and something to write with! ANY PAPER WILL WORK! Fold the paper in half hotdog style, and cut five flaps on one side. On the top of the flaps, write SOMEBODY - WANTED - BUT - SO - THEN (see pictures for specific questions). These do not have to be fancy and colorful, but they certainly can be if you want them to be! Under each flap, they can answer the questions to retell the story. They can even draw pictures if you want! (You're the teacher, remember?!) *To integrate art into this assignment, you can have your kiddo create their own creepy pair of underwear! I have been brainstorming ideas about how to help you with your new job of homeschooling and for now, this is the best idea I could steal from a friend. I know that over the next few weeks, you will probably have lots of questions, concerns, and frustrations, and I want to assist you in any way that I can! I am going to post links to video books that the kids can easily watch & read from a phone, tablet, or computer. I will also post different activities that they can complete to supplement the work packets that the school is providing for you. It is important to note that this is not a requirement from the school, and they will most likely provide additional requirements that they have not made me aware of yet. As for now, I have no idea what those requirements will be, but I will be here to support you and your babies throughout the coming weeks in any way that I can. The packets that are being provided are available on the district website, and they'll be available for pick up in the circle parking lot at the school on Monday. For the most part, your kiddos should be able to work these packets easily on their own or with very little support from you. That is why I wanted to provide you with supplemental activities that will keep their brains working and (hopefully) keep them out of your hair for a little while each day! I have no idea what is to come from the district as far as an academic plan. As information comes to me, I will certainly relay it here and we will get through this together! Hug those babies for me. Tell them I love them, I miss them, and I can't wait to see them!! Wash your hands, Mrs. Sawin |
